Formal Training

 

Formal F&C training sessions are held for new members throughout the season. Training usually takes place at Waterford Hills and is sponsored by MTM, WHRRI and the SCCA Detroit Region, and is a combination of classroom and hands-on learning.

Classroom training includes everything that you will need to know:
- F&C overview
- How a race is organized and the roles of F&C and other support groups
- What Equipment you will use (including Personal, Corner Station, and Communication Radios)
- What are the Corner Station Procedures (including assignments and emergency procedures)
- How you will Communicate (including normal & emergency protocols)
- The Flags and basic Hand Signals

You will be given a tour of the paddock area where you will meet some of the drivers and will get to see the different types of racecars up-close. We’ll point out the interesting and important vehicle features that you need to know about.

 

After lunch, you will be assigned to one of the corners and paired-up with an experienced Corner Worker. Here is where you will apply all of the classroom skills that you just learned.

 

Each person on a corner has a specific job; Corner Captain, Communicator, Flaggers, and Safety. Job assignments are rotated after each race, and you will join right in on the rotation. Don’t worry; your co-workers have got your back covered, always!

 

After a hard day of corner working (the race day usually ends about 6:00pm), everyone heads back to the Tower for some well deserved “liquid refreshments”. At Grattan Raceway everyone heads over to the big pole barn for free beer/wine/pop and the best Bar-B-Q that you have ever tasted!

 

It’s that Simple, and Fun! As with any other hobby, you can spend as much or as little time as you have available. Many workers simply come out to their local track occasionally, while others come out every weekend, and some even travel the country and work tracks in many different cities, states, and foreign countries!

 

Sounds good, but do I need to be “licensed” ?
It’s not required, but many Corner Workers choose to become licensed through the SCCA. Click here to learn more
